One of the craziest parts of this song is that it's *not* just the song playing in reverse and then forwards. It's actually two noticeably different mixes juxtaposed - evidenced by the fact that the shift from reverse to forward is not actually in the very middle of the track. One is slightly longer than the other. Furthermore, the version in this RUclips upload is actually... *reversed* from what's on the album. Here, the longer mix plays in reverse, then flows into the shorter mix playing forwards. On the actual album release, it's the shorter mix that plays backwards into the longer mix which plays forwards. And if you listen closely you can hear all the differences. For one, the reason the longer mix *is* longer is the song cuts off into a surreal break near the end that flickers around like someone channel surfing (or like the misfiring neurons of a mind under electro-shock), and the longer mix also has the melody of Labyrinth playing below the final act of the song, which in my opinion elevates it quite a bit, and makes the shorter mix you hear in this version sound a little hollow in comparison. The amount of work that went into this song is absolutely staggering to behold.
Basically the backwards version in this video is the "distorted" version of the song while the one that plays forward is "undistorted". on Spotify it's the distorted version that plays forwards and vice versa

Man the first time I heard this song was like trying to solve a mystery. You try to piece together the lyrics that are reversed to get an idea of what happened. Then the unreversed lyrics come in and you try to relate it to the previous songs and you start to get an idea of what happened to the poor guy...
fun fact: the song in this video is actually reversed, if you couldn’t tell already the flashing parts in the song are now gone from the 2nd half but that’s because the version with flashes (aka the insane version) is now the reversed 1st half (you can tell because the word “insane” at 2:37 isn’t in reverse)
@@thememoryfishOkay so basically, the whole song is reversed in this video. The original second half is now the reversed beginning, which you can tell by the distortions and strange piano parts that now appear in the first half; for example, in this video, “insane” is audible forward in the first half, while on the album, it is reversed in the second half. The most noticeable distorted section is a 30 second section around 4:10 on the album version, and at 1:40 here, where the single piano note pierces through everything as various snippets play and stop playing sporadically. Meanwhile, the break between “pray” and “nuns” here is at 4:30, and is only 5 seconds, much shorter than the album version. This also changes the instrumentation for some sections. Compare the “see how the serfs” section at 5:00 to the version on streaming, and you’ll notice a persistent buzzing synth in the album version, for instance. Hope that helps!

On the "see how to serfs work the ground" part, the reversed part uses white and light blue while the normal part uses black and dark red. Light blue becomes dark red when inversed. Black and white too of course. I realized this when i was about to ask the significance of the two colors. Also i just noticed that the colors of the reversed part is also inverted from the normal part so its not just the blue and red. Shouldve wrote that instead oops. I can't really express how thankful I am that this song exists. I have an OCD diagnosis, with specific phobias that change over time. My current one is the most prevailing. Though I am medicated, I can still become triggered when I feel concern that I am at risk of my fear actualizing. This song perfectly encapsulates the experience of this disorder for me, and is something that I share with people to help them understand what it is like, despite this not being the actual subject of the song. The most impactful lyric for me is, "See how the serfs work the ground; and they give it all they've got, til' you're down. See how the brain plays around, and you fall inside a hole you couldn't see. Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind." It's just so precious to me, and I wanted to share that, because listening to it almost makes the disease separate from me, like it's being pulled from my head, taken form as this monstrous thing, then killed in front of me. I can't linger on The Mind Electric for too long, as it's almost used as a way of treating my symptoms, and having it around when they aren't present can trigger intrusive thoughts as much as it does quell them when they're present. But I am thankful for it's ability to put into words something nothing else can.
I also have OCD, but mostly in the realm on contamination. This song also really resonates with me, too. For me it's line lines "See how the brain plays around, and you fall inside a hole you couldn't see. Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind." & "Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me". I'm really glad to see somebody else who resonates with this song. :-] Also, I just wanted to say that I hope you're doing okay, & just to know that you aren't alone!!
@@JohnathanCactwo thank you so much for your reply. Mine is also about contamination and very clever, unfortunately. Sometimes it feels like it says “haha, cute” whenever I find something. But eventually this disease just starts slamming itself against the wall when we realize that No Matter What we are safe. “See how the serfs work the ground” the poor things are relentless. I oscillate between being cruel to the disease and kind, yelling at it and speaking gently to it. I am sending much love to you though friend and I have no question about that. I hope you are well as well.
@@clamcastle Thank you!! I get it, one moment I'm fine, & the next everything feels like its crashing down around me. It's nice to be able to connect with somebody else who also gets it.
@@clamcastle I'm lucky that I do! Hoping the same for you. Also, yes!! It can be so hard to explain, & I feel like I end up making people so frustrated when I just can't do something, or when they can't interact with something of mine.
Just finished about half the video with my eyes closed. It's quite immersive, to the point of being sorta uncomfortable. It's almost like you're in Simon's shoes, and you're being electrocuted against your will. I also have a bit of a headache, it's unpleasant, but ups the immersion. Honestly would do that again (not rn, I don't want to have a seizure), I love being immersed in music, and I love feeling like I'm in the song (even if it's unpleasant). 7.9/10, somewhat painful and difficult to get through, but quite immersive.
it seems people are returning to this video. i'm here for it. miracle musical is the best 'band' in history (band in quotes because it's more of a project than a band) and any attention brought to it is good. reminder that this music slaps and you should listen through it.
You ever stumble upon a random Spotify song and then listen to the album and really like it but you're somewhat confused about how it pieces together as a musical so you google it and the Tally Hall wiki REALLY doesn't give you any proper info about what it all means so you go to the lyric video but the comments are all inside jokes and knowledge from like more than a decade's worth of following and you just .... Wonder why the hell you still wanna know what's going on, when the correct proceedings is obviously just to enjoy it in its natural state. Nobody? Nobody at all?
Basically the story is: sailor goes to hawaii where he meets a girl that he loves a lot, one day she dissapears so he searches for her and finds her dead, since all evidence is stacked against him, he claims insanity so he doesn't go to jail, so then they take him to a mental asylum where they use electroshock therapy on him and he actually goes insane, then he manages to escape the asylum and finds a boat so he can sail back to California, but since he's literally insane he doesn't know where he's going and ends up dying in the ocean, then he meets his love in the afterlife.
When it started going "so so so so so so so so so" in the reversed half, I realised this version is reversed. It's normally the less glitched version that plays first, in reverse. And then "insane" is usually garbled in the forwards half, but here it played normally. Odd choice to put out a reverse version as the official lyric video
yea, but idk why but this version is more calm and good sounding. if someone doesnt like all the glitch sound and the bad sounding, than this lyrics video is the best choice
you guys. if you play this video AND the official album version at the exact same time, they sound so cool together. you have to listen to it all the way through. they lose sync at around 1:20 but pick it back up at around 4:49
This is unironically Joe's Magnum Opus, I kind of want to see the timeline of the original master file to see just how many different tracks and samples are used
One thing that really cool to me is that the reverse segment in this version is actually the album/distorted version, you can tell because it’s a bit longer and they are sfx missing when it’s played forward. While on the Album the reversed part is actually this version as it’s shorter. I love that detail of the song mirroring itself while backwards
It's interesting how the backwards part of the song backwards is this, which is a lot less jumbled and broken. It's very interesting comparing both "versions".
I'm curious as to what "Service of the Fee Fi Fo Fum" means. Axon dendrite is referring to a neuron. The quick white/red parts that flash definitely remind me of someone's memories being interrupted by something intense. The slower parts are the major parts that got him to where he has come to. When it comes to the line, "Shrieking in the hall of lull thy genius sates a thirst for trouble" has me thinking he's talking about the doctor in a room down a long quiet corridor who is a genius, but has a desire to cause pain (trouble) and see how the teenager reacts to the 'treatment'. Listening to the line, "Electrifying mine chambers wholly scorching out thine sovereignty", basically seems to be talking about how he's losing himself, his sovereign control over his mind and body. I noticed when the teenager says, "Doctor, I can't tell if I'm not me", there are actually what sounds like two distinct voices, one being himself and the other being the insanity from what I can tell. The last two lines, "When it grows bright the particles start to marvel having made it through the night, never they ponder whether electric calming if you look at it right" could be him talking about himself in the third person, how his brain (particles) marvel that he survived through the night, never having considered how calming (the electric shock therapy) could be if you looked at it with the right perspective. This is a very interesting song. Who the Hell even thought that electric therapy helps people? It makes no sense to me. I'll absolutely be listening to this again.
"Fee Fi Fo Fum" is basically a nonsense phrase, as I'm sure you know. The way that I know it is through Jack and the Beanstalk. It's something that the giant says, but there are many other uses of it, such as in Shakespeare's "King Lear". In that play, "fie" is used to express disapproval. Anyway, in Jack and the Beanstalk, I always saw that infamous line as a way to intimidate. I guess maybe "service of the fee fi fo fum" could perhaps mean that whatever is currently happening, whether this song actually takes place in a courtroom in some verses or not, could be making our protagonist feel like everything is out to get him in some sense. Like this whole thing is some sort of secret group designed to intimidate him. It's a stretch, I know.
@@labva6556 That actually sounds plausible. In Jack and the Beanstalk, the way the giant uses it definitely sounds like an intimidation tactic. Probably the protagonist in this song feels so small compared to everyone else. They do call him a minor, so he is obviously young amidst these adults with lots of power. Maybe he finds the whole situation nonsense, since he knows he's innocent. The way it is phrased reminds me of a church service, so it could mean, "Gathering of Nonsense" or "Ridiculous Gathering". 🤔 Thanks for the theories! 😄
Good song, and the flashing lights fit the whole lore, yknow having him go through electric therapy BUT JESUS CHRIST MAN IM NOT EVEN EPILEPTIC AND I FEEL LIKE IM GONNA HAVE A STROKE WATCHING THIS Also wanna point out that the reversed beginning has inverted colors White is black Black is white Red is blue Simply making the reversed more reversed Also it's weird that it has no glitches but still has the reverse ANOTHER weird thing is that the reversed part is the version that DOES have glitches
Well, I never actually noticed the reversed colors, but god, even after 6 years this song, the lyrics vid AND the album are still 1 of the most confusing, most unique, and the most fire album ever (talking about hawaii part II
Also right after the word infirmary, you can hear (what seems to be) the creak of a door open, like he’s just entered the infirmary and then the craziness ensues.
I’d like to imagine that if this album were to ever get a movie that this part would be equally (if not more) traumatizing and scary than the breakdown scene in the movie “Requiem for a Dream”
@@fixitfeilix5051 good point but i don't understand how prey would fit into the sentence and fit in with the actual theme / events of the song. maybe simon (the one in the electric chair) is prey for the chair?? that's... a every weird analogy but ehh do what you will with it
Listened to this in the middle of the darkness with a 50 inch TV and I felt like I was ascending. I began to shake from side to side because I was trying to protect myself from the flashing lights. I felt like I was on a Electric chair. Truly the best experience. (Note: I don't have epilepsy... Or I was born with epilepsy without being diagnosed)

my favorite song of all time. still havent figured out what it actually means, its just so disturbing and i love it. i listen to the reverse section on loop sometimes. i can sing this in reverse fluently. i am obsessed with this song and i will never know why.
My interpretation of this song is the main character claimed to be insane, and due to the shock therapy he went through, he ended up going insane or actaully was insane, because he says, “see how your brain plays around.” Which could be schizophrenia, which might’ve driven him mad, or the shock altered him.
“Scattering sparks of thought energy deliver me and carry me away”, having lived through COVID, like everyone here, this hits a little too hard. Sometimes the only escape is through the mind.
this version is technically "reversed/mirrored" :) you'd normally hear the "clean" (latter half here) part backwards first, then the distorted one after
never thought I could be so addicted to a lyrics video. found it interesting how this is actually the reversed version of the entire _official_ mind electric, which I've always wanted to hear but never went out of my way to reverse myself or search for someone else who has done it lol. 2:38 insane

Its the undistorted version (the part that is reversed on the released version). And the reversed version used in this video this is the released version (It has more glitches, stutters for the "artistic" effect)

I noticed another thing. :-]
Also, I just wanted to say that I hope you're doing okay, & just to know that you aren't alone!!
@@JohnathanCactwo yes absolutely! I feel bad because it’s so confusing to the people around me I hope you also have a good support system!
@@clamcastle I'm lucky that I do! Hoping the same for you. Also, yes!! It can be so hard to explain, & I feel like I end up making people so frustrated when I just can't do something, or when they can't interact with something of mine.
Today I learned that you're supposed to watch this video with your eyes closed! The flashing makes it look like you're getting electrocuted.
Damn your actually right
oh boy i love getting electrocuted..
(fr tho i’m gonna have to try this if i don’t return… ummm i died..😔✊)
just did it. its crazy how immersive it actually is
I watched the full (unreversed) part with full brightness and my phone very close to my eyes.
WILD experience.
I appreciate the aesthetic of this lyric video but man it feels like its *trying* to cause an epileptic attack lol.
Haha, I'm gonna die.
it completes the experience, making you the viewer feel like simon!!!

I use this video to clean my screen
A banger song and a legitimately good idea at the same time. What a legend.
it seems people are returning to this video. i'm here for it. miracle musical is the best 'band' in history (band in quotes because it's more of a project than a band) and any attention brought to it is good. reminder that this music slaps and you should listen through it.
if you have a seizure during this you'll get the full experience
When I grow old enough to legally smoke weed I'm going to play this song full volume at 3am while high and see what it feels like.
Yeah, but then say what did you felt, lmao
i am so doing that
Will say that I had a panic attack

The backwards part of the song always plays in my head after I take Tylenol, I love this song so much!
You know that you’ve made a good song when it’s still a total banger in reverse
My brother liked this video so much he was dancing on the floor frothing in the mouth.
He has been on the floor for 30 minutes now...
i have sad news hes probably dead.
Yes this has happened to me in that exact order
Pretty sure i understand the story of the album, if you don't know i can explain. From what i know, anyways
@@therealmaggiemae please explain im very not unsmart, anti intelligent
Basically the story is: sailor goes to hawaii where he meets a girl that he loves a lot, one day she dissapears so he searches for her and finds her dead, since all evidence is stacked against him, he claims insanity so he doesn't go to jail, so then they take him to a mental asylum where they use electroshock therapy on him and he actually goes insane, then he manages to escape the asylum and finds a boat so he can sail back to California, but since he's literally insane he doesn't know where he's going and ends up dying in the ocean, then he meets his love in the afterlife.
It’s not really a musical
This song altered my brain chemistry to the point where I have to listen to it at least once a day to stay sane.
like electroshock therapy the song its the temporary cure to my mental illness

@@invisible_human1232so true !!
lmfao fr
this lyrics video is incredible and it does NOT get enough recognition
When it started going "so so so so so so so so so" in the reversed half, I realised this version is reversed. It's normally the less glitched version that plays first, in reverse. And then "insane" is usually garbled in the forwards half, but here it played normally.
Odd choice to put out a reverse version as the official lyric video
yea, but idk why but this version is more calm and good sounding. if someone doesnt like all the glitch sound and the bad sounding, than this lyrics video is the best choice
I feel like it's purposely to cause confusion and intentionally create a mandella effect, which for a song about one going insane, is genius
I think simon saw this and the crazy visuals uncrazed him and made it ok

This is unironically Joe's Magnum Opus, I kind of want to see the timeline of the original master file to see just how many different tracks and samples are used
One thing that really cool to me is that the reverse segment in this version is actually the album/distorted version, you can tell because it’s a bit longer and they are sfx missing when it’s played forward. While on the Album the reversed part is actually this version as it’s shorter. I love that detail of the song mirroring itself while backwards
sometimes i like to watch the flashing bits on full brightness without blinking, its a very strange experience and im glad i havent died yet
My man about to ascend by watching this without blinking
It's interesting how the backwards part of the song backwards is this, which is a lot less jumbled and broken. It's very interesting comparing both "versions".

0:29 “someone”
0:36 “please”
0:40 “around”

@@DoubleDealingDisarray Yes, you took the words out of my mouth exactly, I'm glad I was able to help you out :D

Joe hawley, had blessed us with comments now.
I wonder why….you don’t think….no couldn’t be
Yeah
My interpretation of this song is the main character claimed to be insane, and due to the shock therapy he went through, he ended up going insane or actaully was insane, because he says, “see how your brain plays around.” Which could be schizophrenia, which might’ve driven him mad, or the shock altered him.
“Scattering sparks of thought energy deliver me and carry me away”, having lived through COVID, like everyone here, this hits a little too hard. Sometimes the only escape is through the mind.
Nothing can ever beat this song

4:00 I just noticed this "insane" is put normal, while the Spotify version is reversed
Wonder, why. But the spotify version has allot of differences sooo
The whole song is reversed so the this is the of the “normal song “
this version is technically "reversed/mirrored" :)
you'd normally hear the "clean" (latter half here) part backwards first, then the distorted one after
It’s like the whole reversed song is a huge subliminal message
Flash warning could have been included in the title or the thumbnail.
